Trips and hikes
Solo hikes and trips: “If I'm not back by…”
Telling someone where you're going and when you'll be back is the oldest safety rule outdoors. Trip mode does it for you: set a time, and if you haven't checked back in by then, Quietbeat starts a check.
How trip mode works
- Start a trip and set your return time. For example 6 PM. Add a note your contacts will see if needed: the trail you're on, where you parked.
- Enjoy the day. There's nothing to do until you're back.
- End the trip when you're back. Tap I'm back. Walking around on its own doesn't end a trip: only you can, with I'm back or I'm OK, so a hiker whose watch keeps counting steps on the wrong trail still gets a check.
- If the time passes, you're asked first. Quietbeat asks if you're okay. If there's no answer, your contacts are told, with your note and the last time we heard from your phone.
Before you go
Charge your phone
And keep it with you. Low Power Mode can slow down some signals.
Set a time with margin
Choose a return time that leaves room for a slow descent or a late bus.
Location, if you want it
Turn on location sharing and your last known area is included in an alert. Nothing is tracked along the way.
Test once
Send your contacts a test alert so they recognize a real one.
Where there's no signal
The trip timer runs on our servers, so the check starts on time even if your phone has no signal. Your contacts get your note and the last time we heard from your phone.
Quietbeat can't reach you without signal, and it's not a satellite messenger or a rescue service. For remote areas, leave a trip plan with someone and carry a personal locator beacon or satellite communicator.
Questions
What if I'm running late?
When Quietbeat asks, tap I'm OK and no one is told. Then end the trip when you're back.
Is Quietbeat a GPS tracker?
No. Quietbeat doesn't track where you go. If you turn on location sharing, only your last known area is shared, and only inside an alert.
Which plan includes trip mode?
Trip mode comes with Plus ($2.99 a month or $19.99 a year) and Family.
Join the beta
Quietbeat is in beta on iPhone and Android. We're starting with a small group of testers, so we can measure and reduce false alarms before Quietbeat opens to everyone.
For iPhone with iOS 17 or later (Apple Watch optional) and Android 8.0 or later.
